Walk In & Fly – Verification of Documents Revolutionizes Travel

If you have any experience with international travel in the 90s, or even 2010s, you know how exhaustive of a process it used to be.

International travel used to be an ordeal involving waiting periods of months for passports, visas, and other verifications. Even airport security used to take hours on end. Today, it’s not like that. Today, you can even process your check-in online via the e-check-in service. This lets you get to the airport just 30 minutes before your flight and simply fly away.

This simple process which used to be fraught with paperwork and long queues has undergone a remarkable transformation in the recent few years. Ever wonder why?

The main player involved in this revolution is the document verification technology. Thanks to advanced systems for the verification of documents, the process of crossing borders is today smooth and easy. However, much more important than these two benefits is the security that it offers when it comes to border control.

Why Verification Of Documents For International Travel?

The international travel industry is one that requires extensive authentication and security to keep the world safe. Border control authorities are responsible for ensuring there is no smuggling, money laundering, border crossing of PEPs, terrorist activity, aeroplane hijackings, among other crimes. The forging of identity verification documents is what makes these crimes possible at a very foundational level. This makes it critical for airports and border control to set up through systems for the verification of documents to fight fraud.

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) Or e-Check Ins

Electronic travel authorization (eTA) systems for verification of documents are now commonplace at borders and airports. These services allow travelers to submit all their data as well as other supporting documents e.g., passports online. This service is referred to as the e-check in.  Verification of documents via such a check-in greatly saves time for travelers. However, the better benefit is that it allows authorities to easily pre-screen individuals. This enhances security and also prevents fraudulent entries.

Smart Gates For Improved Border Control And Verification Of Documents

By using smart gates, we are going towards an era of border crossing in which travelers can simply walk through border control gates or security without the need for any human interaction at all. These smart gates are equipped with smart document scanning systems as well as facial recognition technology for precise verification of documents.

When a user walks through such a gate, the intelligent systems scan their passports and visa to check for authenticity and validity. Next, a facial scan is run alongside the collection of other biometric data such as fingerprints. This helps to verify and cross check identities. As long as you’re using legitimate and valid documents, you will be able to access your transport within seconds. This not only reduces waiting times for travelers but also helps to free up security officers. These officers can then easily focus on more important tasks like complex cases and security threats.

Airports Using Smart Gates In 2024

While there are many airports using smart gates for verification of documents, some of the major ones include:

In Australia, 8 major international airports have set up smart gates for quick verification of documents. These include Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. While at the other 4 you still have to interact with officers,  Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney airports have self-service kiosks. According to the Australian Border Force , all adults with a valid ePassport are eligible for these gates. When it comes to children’s verification of documents only those with Australian citizenship are allowed.

The Dubai International Airport or DXB also features smart gates . At this airport, verification of documents via smart gates is for all Emirates citizens, as well as those with biometric passports. The best part is that even if you have a visa on arrival policy for Dubai, you can still use these gates. A total of 112 gates over the 3 DXB terminals are functional.

Document Validation For Fighting Fraud

The threat of document frauds is a constant challenge for the travel industry. The digital age has unfortunately made it even easier to fake border travel documents. Sophisticated forgeries and tampering techniques are in use and pose significant security risks. However, advanced digital document attestation methods are in active use to combat these threats.

Today, forensics experts and AI systems are working in cooperation to carry out verification of documents with great accuracy and precision. The use of AI offers an attention to detail, identifying inconsistencies and subtle signs of forgery, which are impossible with the human eye.

Conclusion – Verification Of Documents For A Better Future

Today, borders are strict lines dividing humankind into limited areas and pieces of land. These allow some individuals to have access to the best services in the world. However, others have to suffer through great hardships for even bottom tier life amenities merely because of their places of birth. With digital verification of documents, we can make borders invisible. A revolution in the way we carry out our verification of documents will create seamless borders. This will allow for swift verification without any compromise on security.

By accessing the power of such collection and authentication of proof of identity documents, we can create an efficient, secure, and ultimately more enjoyable travel experience for everyone.
